Smart Plugs & Monitoring: The Energy Detective
How much does your gaming PC cost to run? Is that old freezer in the garage efficient? Smart Plugs with 'Energy Monitoring' give you the exact data.
The Blind Spot
You get a bill for $200. You know the AC was a lot of it. But what about the rest? We have dozens of devices plugged in. Which ones are the vampires?
The Tool: Energy Monitoring Plugs
Not all smart plugs measure power. Reliable ones like Kasa (EP25), Shelly, or Eve Energy have monitoring chips essentially. They track:
- Current Draw (W): Real-time usage.
- Daily Total (kWh): Consumption over time.
The Detective Work
Buy a 4-pack ($40). Use them to audit your house.
Suspect #1: The Entertainment Center
Plug in the power strip controlling your TV, Xbox, Soundbar, and Subwoofer. Check the "Always On" wattage. You might find it draws 40 Watts while off. (Quick Start modes are notorious). 40W = 350 kWh/year = $70/year waste. Fix: Set the smart plug to turn off the strip automatically at 1:00 AM.
Suspect #2: The Garage Fridge
Plug it in for 24 hours. If it uses 3 kWh/day, it is costing you $200/year. A new fridge uses 1 kWh/day. Fix: If the fridge is empty, unplug it. If it's full of $50 of frozen peas, realize you are spending $200 to save $50.
Suspect #3: The PC
High-end Gaming PCs draw 600W+ while gaming. But do they sleep correctly? Monitor it. You might find your "Screensaver" mode is still drawing 200W.
Whole Home Monitors (Level 2)
If you want to track everything (including hardwired appliances like the stove/AC), install a Sense or Emporia Vue in your breaker panel. CT Clamps snap around the main wires and read the magnetic fields to tell you exactly where every electron is going.
Summary
Data is power. A $10 smart plug can find $100 of waste in the first week.
