Radiant Cooling: Can Floors Cool You Down?
Radiant heat is common. But running cold water through your floors to cool a house is the ultimate comfort upgrade. The danger of condensation.
The Concept
We love Radiant Heating (warm floors). Radiant Cooling is the same pipes, but running 55°F water instead of 110°F water. Your body radiates heat to the cold surface (floor or ceiling panels). It feels like walking into a stone cathedral on a hot day. Pure silence. No draft.
The Dew Point Danger
The problem: Sweating Floors. If you cool the floor to 55°F, and the room air is humid (Dew Point 70°F), water will condense on the floor. Your living room becomes a slip-and-slide. Mold grows instantly.
The Solution: Tight Control
Radiant cooling ONLY works if you have erratic humidity control.
- Sensors: You need dew point sensors in the slab.
- Dehumidification: You need a massive dedicated dehumidifier (DOAS) to keep indoor humidity below 45%.
- Mixing Valve: The computer modulates the water temp to always be 2°F above the current dew point.
Is It Worth It?
- Comfort: 10/10. Unbeatable.
- Efficiency: High (Water moves energy 25x better than air).
- Complexity: Extreme.
- Cost: High.
Verdict
In Arizona (Dry)? Amazing. In Florida (Swamp)? Dangerous comfort roulette. Stick to air conditioning.
