Motion vs. Presence Sensors: Fixing the 'Waving Arms' Problem
Traditional PIR sensors suck. If you sit still, the lights go out. The new 'mmWave' Radar sensors act like Sci-Fi tech, seeing you breathe.
The PIR Limit (Passive Infrared)
Your standard motion sensor uses PIR. It looks for moving heat sources. If you walk into the room -> Heat moves -> Lights ON. If you sit on the couch and read a book -> Heat stops moving -> Lights OFF. Result: You waving your arms like a maniac in the dark to re-trigger the sensor.
The Revolution: mmWave Radar (Millimeter Wave)
Radar technology (used in self-driving cars) has shrunk down to a $20 chip. mmWave sensors actively emit radio waves and measure the reflection. They are sensitive enough to detect:
- Your chest moving as you breathe.
- Your fingers typing.
- Your head tilting slightly.
They don't detect "Motion"; they detect Presence. "Is there a human here?"
The Perfect Automation
With mmWave, you can finally trust the lights.
- Bathroom: Lights stay on while you are in the bath (still).
- Office: Lights stay on while you type.
- Bedroom: Lights know you are in bed (and can automate sleep modes).
The Setup
Companies like Aqara (FP2), Everything Presence, and Inovelli make these sensors. Note: Radar is too good. It can see through drywall and detect a ceiling fan moving. You often need to set "Zone exclusions" to map your room so it ignores the cat or the curtains.
Hybrid Mode
The best setup uses both:
- PIR: Triggers INSTANTLY when you walk in (Radar has a slight lag).
- mmWave: Keeps the lights ON once you are there.
Conclusion
If you abandoned "Automated Lights" because they were annoying, it's time to come back. The tech has caught up to the dream.
