Greywater Systems 101: Legal Water Reuse
Throwing laundry water into the sewer is a waste. A 'Laundry-to-Landscape' system lets you water your fruit trees for free, and it's legal in many states.
What is Greywater?
- Blackwater: Toilets, Kitchen Sinks (food waste). Do not touch.
- Greywater: Showers, Bathroom Sinks, Laundry Machines. Reusable.
Greywater has some soap and dirt, but it is perfect for irrigation. Plants (especially trees) love it.
The "Laundry-to-Landscape" (L2L) System
This is the most popular implementation because it often requires no permit (in California, Arizona, etc.) and implies no new pumps. Your washing machine already has a pump inside it.
How it Works
- Diverter Valve: You install a 3-way brass valve behind the washer.
- Position A: Sewer (For when you use bleach/Diapers).
- Position B: Garden.
- The Run: A 1-inch pipe runs through the wall to the backyard.
- Mulch Basins: You dig trenches filled with wood chips around your trees/bushes.
- Emitters: The pipe releases water under the mulch.
Why Mulch?
The wood chips act as a biological filter. They break down the soap and prevent humans/pets from touching the greywater directly (safety rule #1).
The Rules of Greywater
- No Storage: You cannot store greywater in a tank for more than 24 hours. It turns septic (blackwater) and smells like death. Use it immediately.
- No Spraying: You cannot use sprinklers. It must be underground or under mulch to prevent aerosolizing bacteria.
- No Root Vegetables: Don't water carrots or potatoes that you eat directly. Fruit trees (apples, lemons) and bushes are safe because the edible part never touches the water.
Soap Selection
If you do this, you must switch to "Greywater Safe" detergents (Ecos, Oasis, etc.). Common detergents have salts (Boron) that will salt the earth and kill your plants over time.
ROI
A DIY L2L system costs ~$300 in parts. It saves ~15 gallons per load. For a family doing 7 loads a week = 5,500 gallons of free irrigation water per year. In a drought, keeping your mature trees alive without using drinking water is priceless.
